Pre-Writing

Recently someone very smart pointed out something I had never thought about before.  Writing (i.e., handwriting) is about connecting lines and curves together.  Therefore, she asserted, if we give kids lots of practice with drawing vertical, horizontal, and diagonal lines, in addition to drawing controlled circles, they should learn to write letters and numbers easily.  Makes perfect sense, right? (Why hadn’t I thought of that before?!!?)

Instead of having Isabelle try to write letters and numbers right now, I’m having her zip, zoom, and circle around the page in an effort to hone her pre-writing skills. Here are some pics of her hard at work this morning:

We're working on making ONE circle and stopping. She can do it, but often prefers making lots of circles without stopping.
